Skills and Experience - John C. Glover
Introduction
I am a co-founder of our consulting company which was formed in 1995 upon our return from an overseas assignment. Upon our return to the west coast we were invited to join a multi-disciplinary consulting association (GNA Consulting Group Limited) based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This association required the creation of a limited company. MayneStay Consulting Group Ltd. was incorporated in late 1995 and continues today.
I will preface my comments about skills and experience to set the tone for further remarks.
After serving Canada in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for five years in Canada, the UK, Europe and North Africa, I decided to leave the military and get involved in the, then fledgling, computer industry. At that time there were no formal degree courses available for this discipline so I took advantage of every industry training course that was being provided, and necessary, as I worked my way upward through the various iterations of change. Leveraging off of my military training in Airborne Fire Control (automated weapons systems) I was already trained in analog and digital computers for the control of firepower on jet aircraft. During my tour of duty I was also required to train other airmen and officer candidates on the fundamentals of the gun laying fire control equipment.
My first work experience in this new industry sector was with Remington Rand Corporation (soon to be renamed as Remington Rand Univac Corporation) as a field engineer responsible for the installation and maintenance of large scale EDP systems. We have certainly come a long way since the late 1950s. We have "orders of magnitude" more power and functionality in our handhelds than that first mainframe system that I worked on as a field engineer.
So, for my education and competency I leveraged off of my military training and the many vendors that I had association with due to the rapid development of information technology. OEM vendors (Other Equipment Manufacturers) were the order of the day as many entrants got into the mix. As a result, I became intimately familiar with the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) model that became a standard for interoperability. I like to refer to my spectrum of computer companies and their OEM or direct ancillary equipment as the B U N C H. Burroughs, Univac, NCR, Control Data Corporation and Honeywell Information Systems. NOT too many left today and those that are left have morphed a few times.
As time passed, and the OSI work was not maturing quickly enough for the USA Government and the military, the ARPA / DARPA project came into being and developed a more relevant model to protect the USA from the loss of a portion of the, then established, communications network. Resilience was the pre-requisite. Information Security and Privacy were never part of that original design. The Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) satisfied the design objectives and the INTERNET was born (vintage 1977). The Internet was never intended to be a commercial offering but business and industry saw this development as a breakthrough in global business transactions and we experienced the DOT COM. We have been undergoing rework ever since to make this Internet technology robust, scalable and resilient. A great Work In Progress (WIP) and we still do NOT understand the full problem set after some decades of development. As we have discovered, we have devised ways to add functionality to our Internet technology, and it is vitally dependent upon telecommunications from a variety of perspectives. Hence my inclusion of telecommunications into my portfolio of skills and experience. A consultants task list writ large. Through association with professional groups like the CTCA and STC (now the SCTC) my capabilities in this new space progressed quickly.
* CTCA -- Canadian Telecommunications Consultants Association
* STC -- The Society of Telecommunications Consultants (amalgamated with the CTCA and rebranded)
* SCTC -- The Society of Communications Technology Consultants International -- https://www.sctcconsultants.com/
So, with this as a bit of a preamble let me be more specific about what I can offer in this space.
